I thought I’d share my new hair with you all, this might not be super exciting for some of you, but I finally decided to get rid of the dark ends of where my previous dye job was growing out. I dyed my hair dark brown for about 3 years, and have been attempting to grow that out for the past year and a bit now.
The last time I got my hair coloured was January, when I got a few highlights put through my dark colour to break it up a bit, and I’ve been growing it out ever since. Today my stylist dyed the bottom part of it which was still pretty dark, and did a bit of work on the layers to try to blend it all together. She also added some highlights through the top, where my natural colour is, because my hair does naturally highlight in places anyway, and adding to this will help to blend through the blonde better.
I did go in sort of expecting to leave properly blonde, but there is some dark left in the upper layers which she says I’m best off growing out. It’s hard to get a good picture of it, but in natural light the bottom bit is actually looking pretty brassy. It looked the perfect shade in the salon because of the lighting, but once I stepped outside and had a look in the mirror in my car, I was actually a bit gutted at just how orangey it looks. My natural colour is very ashy, and the highlights I’d previously had put through the dark bit went very blonde indeed so I really wasn’t expecting so much brass. I’ve bought the Fudge purple shampoo which should be arriving tomorrow, and I’m eager to see whether this helps to tone down the orangey hues a little bit, otherwise I might end up popping back soon just to see if she can tone it somehow. I’m touching wood that the purple shampoo will just sort it for me, but we will see.
I’m also a bit gutted because she ended up cutting into the cut I’d had done a couple of weeks before (they didn’t have time to colour it at the same time), and now I have a weird chunk at the front which was exactly what I’d just had fixed before, so I might go back and ask them to fix that.
So this weekend has seen me succumb to an epic case of the lurgy. With Flu Jab posters everywhere, and an invasion of Freshers, I was bound to catch something eventually. I knew by about Thursday that I was battling something, my throat was hurting me a lot and I just felt a bit under the weather. I was hammering the Vicks First Defence, and Echinacea which usually does the trick rather well, but Friday night was a friend’s birthday, so thinking I would be fine, I joined in the celebrations, and had a few drinks. Cue my immune system throwing a hissy fit and refusing to fight any more.
Since then I haven’t been able to do much at all, except stay in bed, try to catch up on Breaking Bad, and feel sorry for myself. Today I had to text my boss to say I was definitely not in any shape to be at work, and I’m having a duvet day and crossing everything that I will be well by tomorrow.
I thought I’d make the most of this glamourous situation to share how I’ve been trying to survive being sick, since it is flu season after all, and I’m definitely not the only person feeling this grim right now.
I’ve been turning to all the usual medicines, I made my boyfriend get me some Lemsip and orange juice (no bits) from Asda before he went out on Saturday night, and popped some Night Nurse before going to sleep. I’m not a big fan of the taste of Lemsip, but it does seem to help with my throat and my cough, which is much appreciated.
I’ve been trying to make sure I keep on top of taking all my Vitamins, because it’s more important than ever when you’re sick. On a day to day basis I have a pill organiser like an old lady, and I keep vitamins C, D, E, Folic Acid, Beta Carotene, and my thyroid medication in there, and I’ve been keeping up the Echinacea. I also haven’t been feeling up to eating much over the past few days, so I’ve been trying to get my nutrients in smoothie form, and this morning my mum made me this Green Smoothie. You can find lots of recipes for green smoothies online, but this one contains Spirulina Powder (which helps to boost the immune system, reduce fatigue, and reduce inflammation, amongst many other benefits), and Udo’s Choice oil (really good for maintaining the levels of Omega 3 and 6 our bodies need), which I try to make sure I have on a daily basis anyway and have used for the past ten years.
I was sent the Weleda Blackthorn Elixir* last week, and it couldn’t have arrived at a more perfect time. Blackthorn is supposed to invigorate, rebalance, and strengthen the body, according the anthroposophical view of the human being and nature, and it’s great as a supplement when you’re sick. It’s rich in vitamins and antioxidants, and helps fight the free-radicals that cause damage to healthy cells. You can put this elixir in tea, milk, or water, and personally I like to just put it in a glass of hot water. If you’re feeling a bit feverish though, you can also put it in cold water and add ice, so it’s very versatile. Unlike Lemsip this actually tastes really nice, and feels a bit more like a treat than medicine.
Beauty wise, it’s safe to say that my skin is not having a good time, I’ve been battling hormonal acne due to coming off the pill as it is, but I think we all find out skin goes a bit crazy when we get sick. To try and combat this, I’ve been busting out the skincare saviours. While having hot baths and sticking to your normal skincare routine is highly recommended, personally I just haven’t been able to move out of bed too much, and while I know using makeup wipes is generally frowned upon, in times like these it’s better to keep some by your bed than do nothing. I’ve been using the Asda Protect Exfoliating Wipes for years now, after picking up a packet on a whim for a festival. They are textured, so you can literally exfoliate with them, and they contain antibacterial ingredients and are really refreshing. I have found these actually really help my skin avoid breaking out, so I always keep a packet on hand for emergency situations where my skincare routine goes out the window. They’re the only wipes I’ve ever tried that I’ve actually liked, and they’re also really cheap and easy to come by. I tend to give my face a bit of a massage with one, and then wipe down my neck, upper back, and chest because I tend to get breakouts in those areas. I’ve been keeping my La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo by my bed to use in place of a moisturiser, and help with the billions of imperfections I now have. It feels much nicer than using a heavy moisturiser, and my skin needs all the help it can get right now.
The final product I’ve been using a lot over the past few days is the Weleda Skin Food* (not pictured, because my tube is looking shall we say a little bit well loved these days). This stuff is so amazingly multipurpose, and I use it for something or other every single day (usually combatting my dry eyelids… yep, that’s a thing) but right now it’s invaluable for avoiding a sore nose. With all the nose blowing I’ve been doing over the past few days (I think I might have to plant some trees to make up for all the tissue I’ve gone through) I’d usually have a very sore, dry, cracked nose, but I’ve been putting this stuff on the tip of my nose and it’s like this cold never happened. It’s not even sore at all! And I won’t have to spend the next week once I’m better trying to apply foundation without highlighting dry cracked skin. Bonus!
So a lot of us have done spending bans before, and it’s certainly not a new concept by any means. But I have been in a bad way financially for many years now, and I have a bit of a different reason for wanting to do a spending ban. I am pretty convinced that my spending is already very minimal, and I want to take the month of October to do an experiment. Am I really as thrifty as I make myself believe, or am I just kidding myself?
I’ve decided to use the month of October to keep an eye on my spending in a more structured way, and I think it would be awesome if you guys joined in.
I’d love it if we could all share tips, progress, or relevant posts with each other through the month of October using the hashtag #NOSPENDOCTOBER
This could be motivation, tips, ‘shopping my stash’ posts/videos (I am defintely going to be doing at least a few of these myself) or just anything you feel is relevant.
I don’t want to share any details of my personal financial situation on here, but I may do a final ‘this is the difference in my spending compared to previous months’ summary at the end or something along those lines, after sticking to the following rules religiously:
No makeup or beauty products
No shampoo or conditioner
No skincare products that aren’t essential
No clothes, shoes, bags
No nail polish
No salon beauty treatments
No chocolate, sweets, or unnecessary snacks
No magazines, books, dvds
MY ALLOWED LIST:
Cleaning products and general household items as they run out
Cleanser, skincare items I need to keep my acne at bay (can’t afford to experiment there)
Haircare products that will volumise my hair, but only ‘holy grail’ products, not everything I hear about (my hair is getting in the way of my happiness enough as it is)
A halloween costume
Beauty products I run out of and have no alternatives for in my stash eg mascara
My one weekly cinema trip (I go on Vue Tuesdays so spend no more than £5 tops anyway)
Transport costs (petrol, taxis)
A strict £20 budget for any nights out with friends
I’ve tried to make my rules realistic, I’m not going to become a hermit and make myself miserable, but I am going to keep a conscious eye on how much money I spend through out the month, and see by the end of the month how greatly this differs from my normal spending habits!
Let me know if you’re going to join in the comments, and spread the word! I’d love it if I had a few people to do it with me by October the 1st!
I have been super busy basically rearranging my entire home lately, moving the home office out of the box room and turning said box room into a wardrobe/dressing room, and as tends to happen, my mind is still buzzing with ideas of things that could be improved. When I was younger I really wanted to be an interior designer, something I never pursued, but secretly wish I had. To this day I spend hours and hours browsing interior design blogs, drooling over room layouts and wishing I was super rich so I could have loads of houses in exotic places and decorate them all however I want.
The next room on my list to upscale is my bedroom, and Chaise Longue Boutique have what I consider to be the perfect Princess bed. I’ve always wanted a really luxurious bedroom with beautiful gilded furniture, what girl doesn’t want to feel like a Princess? Inspired by this, I whipped up a wishlist that makes me think ‘modern Princess’, and I am now lusting after a whole new dream bedroom.
The Chandelier light is from Matalan, and the chest of drawers is also from Chaise Longue Boutique. Both these, and the gorgeous little trinket boxes I’ve had my eye on for a while from Gifts & Pieces tie into the whole luxury setting so well, while the amazingly vibrant cushions from Heal’s add a pop of colour and a modern element to the mix. I absolutely love these cushions, they’re such amazing designs! I’m a big fan of bold accent accessories in otherwise muted rooms, because although I love simplicity, I don’t like to be too timid, even if I am a Princess.
It wouldn’t be a room of mine without at least one candle, and I’m think having fresh flowers somewhere really makes a room. I’m having a little bit of a love affair with peonies at the moment!
Please can somebody organise a lottery win for me so that I can actually buy everything from this list?
Hey guys! I’ve been feeling a lot better lately, I’ve made a lot of life changes which seem to be affecting my health positively, so expect to see me back on here a lot more regularly!I just wanted to update you all on my Invisalign process, as I have actually started treatment now and will be getting my attachments a week today! I hope this might be helpful for anybody who is thinking about having it done, or anybody who is just curious as to what is possible with Invisalign.
I’ve posted this on my second channel, as it’s a bit more vloggy than what I normally post, so feel free to subscribe to that channel if you want to follow my journey!
So I have seen a couple of people do this tag now, and since I love these kinds of posts, I thought I’d jump on the bandwaggon. I always used to love filling in those quizzes in Myspace bulletins, and I can’t resist a good tag!
When did you start your blog?
I officially started this blog in October 2012, after wanting to do so for a couple of years.
Have you had any past online presence before (Other blog, YouTube)?
I’ve had a couple of blogs before, and a YouTube, but I recently deleted all but one of my videos because they were a bit terrible.
Why did you start a blog?
I think the main reason I wanted to start this particular blog was for an outlet for my beauty ramblings, since most of my IRL friends don’t share my obsession on quite the same level. I do chat to them about it and recommend things from time to time, but it’s nice to have a community of people who are all into it as much as I am, and I love being a part of that.
When did you become serious about starting a blog?
I’m not sure it’s a case of suddenly being serious, I just decided that it was time. I had always wanted to have a blog, but the main thing that had put me off starting, was that I didn’t want to shell out for a domain name. I am just a little bit OCD about presentation, and I wanted my own URL from the get go. One day I just thought you know what, if I want to do it, I should just do it. So I did. Hello.
What was your first post?
My first post was about Models Own nail polish. It can be found here, and it’s not the best. The images are far too small, imo, but we learn as we grow! Besides which, I didn’t really think that anybody would read it!
What has been your biggest challenge about blogging?
Keeping a regular blogging schedule. I really enjoy blogging, but I find it kinda hard to commit to posting regular features, or posting every single day etc. I post when I want to, about what I want, which might mean that one week I’ve got three nail looks and a face of the day, or a mix of reviews and an outfit post, it is probably a bit too un-structured at the minute, but hey, my blog is only 4 months old, and I am still figuring what I like writing about best. I’m not going to cry about it if I didn’t get as many views one week because I didn’t blog every single day, because I NEVER want blogging to become a chore. I always think it’s really obvious when people are just churning out content in order to keep up. I have a full time job, so I’d rather put the time in to producing good content when I can. With that said though, I would like to pay a bit more attention to having at least SOME kind of schedule.
Where do you see your blog in one year?
I have absolutely no idea. It is so hard to predict, you never know who likes your blog, or why, how many people will be reading it in a few months time etc. I definitely still seeing myself blogging in a year, though, and hopefully with a bit more focus.
What is the most rewarding thing to you about blogging?
Comments and emails, tweets etc from people who read my blog. The nicest thing of all about blogging is hearing from people who like what you’re doing. People put a lot of focus on follower count, but honestly that doesn’t really mean that much. Feedback is so much more rewarding than numbers!
What is the most discouraging thing that happens to you?
Er, nothing. I can’t think of anything discouraging at all. Maybe the bad lighting in the evening? That isn’t really something that happens to me, that’s just nature. It’s a bit of a pain though, cos I get really bad shadows in my room from my light being so high up, and I get most time to take photographs at night, so it’s a bummer that there’s no natural light. I would invest in some of those light boxes but I would literally have nowhere to keep them. That’s a tricky one.
What’s your lasting inspiration or motivation?
Just that I always have things I want to talk about! If I didn’t, I wouldn’t have a blog in the first place. My favourite blogs are also always an inspiration to me, in terms of wanting to better myself all the time and up my production quality.
So I always said that when I hit 100 followers on GFC I would do a little giveaway to say thank you. I never expected it to happen so soon, so thank you guys! Last week, I hit 100, and so as promised, I am holding a little giveaway, just as a thank you for the support.
I really appreciate everybody who follows, comments, or sends me emails and tweets, it means a lot to hear that people like what I do. Blogging is such an outlet for me, and something that I really really enjoy, so it’s always nice to feel like I’m doing something right!
I’m only doing a little tiny giveaway, I certainly have a long way to go before I can afford to be throwing designer handbags at my readers, but I just wanted to share a few of my favourite things. I’m also keeping it kinda small because this is a thank you, and not a bribe. I will be giving away:
Barry M Amathyst Glitter Nail Polish
Models Own Southern Lights Nail Polish (you can see my swatches here)
Models Own 3 in 1 Topcoat, Base Coat, & Gloss
I thought since you all know by now that I am obsessed with glitter nail polish it would make sense to give away two of my favourites, and it didn’t feel right not including the whole manicure, so I am also giving away the Models Own base and top coat.
Even though they’re not remotely beauty related, I don’t know anybody who doesn’t love Nerds, so I thought I’d include a packet of Rainbow Nerds, because I love them!
Now, onto the rules…
You must be following me on Google Friend Connect
This giveaway is UK only, sorry! I hope to do international giveaways in the future

I thought I’d do something a bit different today, and show you a place I love rather than a product.
This is a shop called ’13 The Warehouse’ in Morecambe, a town near where I live. It is probably the most magical place I have ever been to. It sells everything from jewellery, homewares, children’s toys, hand made greeting cards, has a vintage section downstairs, and even a coffee shop, with free wifi. It is absolutely huge, with different things and themes in each little ‘room’. One of the main rooms has fake grass as the carpet, and the stairs are a rainbow! Everything is just so beautiful.
Every time I go in there I have to use huge amounts of restraint to not buy the whole shop, as everything is just so gorgeous and I could easily deck my house with half the shop. They even have loads of pretty fabric on the top floor, which makes me wish I was better at using the sewing machine, because it would be lovely to be able to make some cushion covers or even the odd item of clothing!
I wish that I didn’t have a full time job, because it would be so nice to just sit in the coffee shop bit (pictured above) and just take a laptop and blog all day.
I skulked around in there just before Christmas and took lots of pictures, which I will share with you below (warning VERY picture heavy), but if you check out their Facebook page they have albums full of even more pictures of the beautiful things they have, and the amazing decor and layout!
I have a trip planned soon to grab some of the gorgeous silver boxes you’ll see in one of the pictures below, and maybe a few other bits for my bedroom as I’m having a bit of a redecorate at the moment.
I definitely recommend giving this shop a visit if you ever visit Morecambe, or live in the area, as it is a real hidden gem, and I wish I could spend all of my time and money in there!
